A man and his dog play on the beach

Ultimate Beach Etiquette

When you like water sports as much as us lot, it’s inevitable you’ll spend considerable amounts of time on sandy stretches. But do you know the official beach etiquette?

Hands to yourself

Yes it might be your honeymoon or romantic break (or hey, you might just be affectionate) but remember that the beach is a family-friendly zone. Not only is it awkward and uncomfortable for everyone if you’re involved in a passionate embrace, but it’s also inappropriate.

Watch your balls

Or frisbees, or anything else that you’re chucking down the beach. The sea front is a great place for group fun but keep in mind that not everyone wants to play.

Leave the birds alone

Seagulls, we mean. You might feel generous sharing your picnic with the local birds, but in fact it’s dangerous for them. It’s important they forage and stick to a natural diet.

Hold the dog

It will depend on the beach if your dog is allowed, but even if four-legged friends are welcome, be respectful. Pick up after them, bring some fresh water and don’t take it for granted that they can swim - dogs can run into trouble with tides too!

Smoking girl on the beach

Smoking not

You’re outside after all, so what’s the problem? Well, most people head to the beach for fresh sea air, so your second-hand smoke might not be appreciated. Sit downwind of others and dispose of your cigarette safely.

Drink and dive

Consuming alcohol by open water is never a good idea, but if you do enjoy a few glasses then be safe. Again make sure you find a bin and don’t leave glass on the beach. It’s dangerous for wildlife and for other people with bare feet.

Warning signs

Always pay attention to the lifeguard and don’t ignore warning signs, whether they’re telling you about strong currents, jellyfish or busy boat areas.

Rubbish on the beach

Don't be rubbish

There will always be bins nearby on the beach so don’t leave your rubbish behind. Not only does it spoil the picturesque sea front but it can be also dangerous for birds and other animals.

Hold your tongue

You’re not the only one on the beach so don’t shout to each other, keep mobile phone noise to a minimum and don’t blast your music on portable speakers - use headphones instead.

Dressing up

By all means wear what you like, but if you’re going to be frequenting beach bars or restaurants then it’s courtesy to put a top on and cover up a little more. Ladies, if you want to sunbathe topless, check your surrounding area and if you’re in another country be mindful of their culture.

Dad and son playing in the sea

Child's play

As long as you keep an eye on them, there’s no reason why kids shouldn’t have fun and splash about. Throwing stones into the water can upset marine life, so discourage this and be sure to fill in any holes they dig when you leave, to prevent accidents.
